Max Verstappen's father Jos has criticised his son following his crash with Sebastian Vettel in the Chinese Grand Prix.

Verstappen was given a ten-second time penalty after the collision, which occurred as he attempted to pass Vettel at the Turn 14 hairpin for second place, with both drivers subsequently dropping down the order.

'The overtake on Vettel really wasn't on. It wasn't possible. It was an error of judgement,' Jos Verstappen said on Ziggo Sport's Peptalk show.

'In some circumstances Max just has to think more. I don't want him to change his driving style. He passed two people at the start. He did that perfectly. That's what we all want to see.

'But we don't want to see these kinds of actions. He needs to have it under control. He needs to think.'

In the Bahrain Grand Prix Verstappen clashed with Lewis Hamilton, but his father insisted that there wasn't anything wrong with that particular incident.

'I don't think there was anything wrong with that, I still think it was a good move,' he added.

MAX VERSTAPPEN'S FORMULA 1 RECORD

2015 - Scuderia Toro Rosso - 12th (49 points)

2016 - Scuderia Toro Rosso, Red Bull Racing - 5th (204 points)

2017 - Red Bull Racing - 6th (168 points)

'Afterwards you could say Max should have given Hamilton more room, but Hamilton could have done the same to Max. That's why it's a racing incident and they're both taking the blame.'

Verstappen is currently in eighth place in the World Drivers' Championship Standings having taken 18 points from the three races so far.

The 20-year-old finished in sixth place in Australia before being forced to retire in Bahrain.

He subsequently secured a fifth-place finish in China and will be aiming to impress in Azerbaijan later this month.

A racing driver with much potential, Verstappen finished in 6th place overall in the 2017 World Drivers' Championship.
