He wrote on Instagram:  'As I embark on my journey to Australia, I think of all those have supported me all this way, who still support me to this day.

'I want to acknowledge you and thank you. Who is to know what 2018 has in store for us. What I do know is that this is our time and it’s up to us to make something of it. Set your goal and don’t let anything stand in your way.'

The message was accompanied by a picture of Hamilton with his suitcase, dressed in his usual flamboyant style, including a pair of Chanel trainers.

Hamilton's thankful message by be reference to a slightly turbulent off-season, which saw him criticised for mocking his nephew on social media for wearing a princess dress.

However he can now concentrate on racing again, with Mercedes expected to remain as front runners in the F1 pack.

Hamilton is among the favourites to triumph, but will face serious competition from Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.
