Arsene Wenger has hinted Jack Wilshere is on the brink of an England recall but admits he is no closer to securing his Arsenal future.

Wilshere has not played for England since the defeat against Iceland in Euro 2016 and has not been called into a squad since November 2016.

Gareth Southgate will name his squad on Thursday for friendlies against Holland and Italy.

'I hope he's in the squad,' said Wenger. 'The vibes I get are positive. I believe he has a good chance but we leave that to Gareth Southgate. I have enough to do with my job.'

Wilshere is out of contract and free to leave at Arsenal at the end of the season with growing interest from clubs at home, including Everton, and abroad, including Juventus.

There is an offer on the table at the Emirates Stadium but it represents a cut in his basic wage and remains unsigned, although Wenger insists he would like him to stay.

'On my side nothing had changed,' said the Arsenal boss. 'Jack will be free at the end of the season.

'We make a proposal. I want him to stay and be linked to the club for the future and I hope he will do it.'

Wilshere, 26, joined the Arsenal academy at the age of nine, made his first-team debut in 2008 and remains popular with the supporters.

He has been plagued by injuries and last season's loan at Bournemouth ended prematurely when he broke a leg.

Back at Arsenal, he was not in the team at the start of the season but he has forced his way back into Wenger's thinking during another disappointing campaign.

Wilshere is expected to start against AC Milan in the second-leg of the Europa League last-16 tie. Arsenal lead 2-0 from the first leg.

Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin are available again after injuries.
