Tiger Woods faces a lengthy wait to make his first Open Championship start since 2015 after being handed a late tee time for the opening round at Carnoustie on Thursday.

Three-time winner Woods, who missed out in the last two years due to injury, will get his campaign for a 15th major title under way at 3.21pm alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Scotland's Russell Knox.

The last of Woods' Open titles came back in 2006 at Hoylake and the 42-year-old will encounter similar conditions at Carnoustie, which is playing so hard and fast that players have been driving into the Barry Burn in front of the 18th green in practice.

In the absence of 1999 champion Paul Lawrie, who is ruled out through injury, fellow Scot and 1985 winner Sandy Lyle will hit the opening tee shot at 6.35am.

Lyle is joined in the opening group by two-time major winner Martin Kaymer and England's Andy Sullivan, with former Masters champion Danny Willett also getting an early start at 6.57am.

Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson tees off shortly after 8am with defending champion Jordan Spieth starting his bid for back-to-back titles at 9.58pm alongside Justin Rose and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Rory McIlroy, who lifted the Claret Jug in 2014, tees off at 12.53pm alongside Australia's Marc Leishman and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is relishing the challenge posed by hard and fast conditions as he looks to become the first back-to-back winner of the Open for a decade.

Spieth gave his pre-event press conference before getting a first-hand look at Carnoustie, but has already heard plenty about the shape of the course from fellow competitors and caddie Michael Greller.

'I haven't played one hole yet,' Spieth said. 'I talked to a couple of my friends and they said it's extremely baked out. Michael said you might wear out your four or five irons off the tee, a couple of longer hitters might take driver more because I don't think the rough is that bad.'

Asked if he relished the challenge, Spieth added: 'Absolutely. I love links golf, I very much enjoy coming over here.

'The firmest might have been the Open at Muirfield [in 2013], the weather was perfect that week and it baked out but there wasn't much wind.

'Hopefully we get a pretty even draw; that's the one thing the Open can bring, you can eliminate half the field with one afternoon of bad weather which is disappointing if you are on the wrong side.'
